Thailand’s beautiful festival of lights delights kids of all ages

By on November 10th, 2011

Goosebumps time. Is there anything more magical than a gazillion holiday lights shimmering in the dark? Kids and grown-ups delight in the spectacle of Loi Krathong, a Thai full-moon festival. On the 12th month of the Thai lunar calendar, this year Loi Krathong is today, Nov. 10.

Locals fashion elaborately decorated boats out of banana leaves to float flowers, candles, coins, food and incense on a river, canal or pond—traditionally to honour the spirit of the waters and symbolically let go of bad feelings. And of course, it’s about fun: raft competitions, fireworks, even beauty contests. Another similar northern Thai festival around the same time, Yi Peng, revolves around releasing hundreds of ethereal floating lanterns, like iridescent jellyfish floating in the night sky.

Four Seasons Resort Chiang Mai marks the occasion by launching hundreds of kum loy floating lanterns from the grounds of the resort, letting guests release their own, and sending their wishes up to the heavens. A great opportunity for photos, and a beautiful experience you’re likely never to forget.
