Most parents are proud when their tween offers to take out the garbage or does a bang-up job on her geography assignment for school. Then there’s Olivia Bouler. This elementary school student from Islip, New York (Long Island) — an artist, sax player and aspiring ornithologist — was deeply affected by the American Gulf Coast oil spill and the resulting devastation to wildlife, and particularly, birds. She decided to write to the Audubon Society: “I’m 11 years old and willing to help…”
Help she did. Not only has Olivia raised $200,000 for the cause by giving 500 of her bird drawings in exchange for donations, she put together a book featuring her beautiful illustrations, Olivia’s Birds: Saving the Gulf (Sterling Publishing). Olivia sends proceeds from her book to the Audubon Society. She’s appeared in print and on TV from CNN and “The Today Show” to “Larry King Live” and actively promotes her cause through events, on Facebook and Twitter.
We’ve invited this amazing young lady to visit Four Seasons Resort Costa Rica at Peninsula Papagayo later this month. A bird-lover’s paradise, Costa Rica is home to some 900 species. During her stay, Olivia will meet with students at a local school, hand out copies of her book and lead them in a bird-drawing lesson.
Who knows, maybe Costa Rica will inspire a second book?
